We are thinking of purchasing the Vitocrossal 300 CU3A. For the beginning service it will use propane. But at a later time, can it be converted to solar thermal?

yes, that is possible. You can retrofit solar thermal energy later and control it via the SM1 module or the SD4 solar control unit.
